“Highest taxes since the war” is the Daily telegraph’s simple take. It says the prime minister has abandoned two manifesto pledges as he raised National insurance and paused the triple lock on pensions to fund the NHS and care. Analysis from the paper’s associate editor Camilla Tominey says that “we have witnessed the PM sound the death knell for Conservatism”.
