The Guardian reports on warnings that Liz Truss’ emergency tax cut plans could cost more than £50bn a year and “fail to help the worst-off deal with the rising cost of living”. The paper says her rival, former chancellor Rishi Sunak, “threw down the gauntlet” by announcing he would build on the existing £15bn package of support measures – contrasting them with Ms Truss’ reluctance to commit to benefit increases or further rebates.
