The Tory leadership contender Liz Truss when she was environment secretary was behind cutting million pounds of funding earmarked for tackling water pollution, according to the Guardian. It says Ms Truss set out in a 2015 spending review to reduce funding for the Environment Agency by £235m, including a £24m cut from a grant for surveillance of water companies to prevent dumping of raw sewage. It comes as criticism mounts over sewage being pumped on to beaches.
