The Guardian says Israeli forces entered a “new phase” of their war against Hamas in Gaza on Thursday, launching a “probing action in preparation for a more sustained ground offensive”. Infantry, tanks and armoured bulldozers moved in overnight and carried out an hours-long on Hamas positions in the north of the territory, the paper says. It adds that the Israeli military says the operation was designed to “search for tunnel systems and test Hamas’s responses”. The page also carries a picture of Wael al-Dahdouh, a journalist with Al Jazeera, mourning after his wife, son, daughter and grandson were killed in an Israeli air strike.
